대한민국의 보이그룹 방탄소년단의 리더이자 메인 래퍼인 RM은 1994년 9월 12일 경기도 고양시 일산구에서 태어났다.
BTS의 시작, RM.
2010년 언더그라운드에서 활동하는 RM의 래핑을 본 한국의 래퍼 슬리피는 그의 연락처를 넘겨받아빅히트 엔터테인먼트 대표 방시혁에게 전해줬고, RM은 방탄소년단의 첫 멤버로 빅히트 엔터테인먼트의 연습생으로 합류하게 됐다.
당시 RM에 대해 방시혁대표는 “주제를 다루는 사고의 깊이와 언어 사용의 유려함, 랩을 한국말로 풀어가는 방식등이 17세라는 나이가 무색할 만큼 뛰어났다” 고 회상하기도 했다.
방대표는 사실 RM을 중심으로 '힙합 크루(힙합 음악을 하는 일종의 팀)'를 결성할 계획이었다. 하지만 곧 아이돌그룹을 제작하는 것으로 방향을 선회하게 된다. 왜냐하면 한국 대중음악시장에서 주류가 아이돌 가수 위주로 돌아가고 있는 현실을 외면하긴 어려웠기 때문이다. 대신 방탄소년단의 방향을 처음부터 '힙합 아이돌'로 정하고, 단순히 사랑 노래가 아니라 또래의 실제 고민과 삶을 노래에 녹이고자 했다.
그 후 대구에서 프로듀서로 활동했던 슈가와 광주 출신의 댄서 제이홉과 함께 빅히트 연습생으로 트레이닝을 받았고, 이후 진, 정국, 뷔, 지민도 합류했다. 이후 2013년 6월 12일에 데뷔 싱글 앨범 [2 COOL 4 SKOOL]을 발매했고, 다음날6월 13일 RM은 Mnet Mcountdown 을 통해 방탄소년단 멤버로서 공식적으로 데뷔하게 된다.다.

BTS의 리더 RM은 그룹 내에서 멤버들과 소통하는 리더십을 보여주고 있다. 그는 소속사 빅히트엔터테인먼트 직원들과 방시혁 대표, 멤버들 사이에서 합리적 조율자 역할을 잘 해내기로 정평이 나 있다. BTS멤버들은 입을 모아 “RM이 없었다면 방탄도 없었다”라고까지 말한다고 한다.
RM은 “내가 좋은 리더가 아니라 다른 멤버들이 나를 좋은 리더로 만들어준다”라고 말하는 겸손함도 보인다.
RM의 리더십의 특징은 ‘부드러운 카리스마'와 팀원을 챙기는 ‘서번트 리더십'으로 본다
궂은일은 먼저 나서서 책임지고, 멤버들이 스스로의 가치를 더욱 돋보일 수 있도록 너무 무겁지도 너무 가볍지도 않게 편하게 북돋아주는 모습을 보여준다.
이런 RM의 서번트 리더십은 방송 인터뷰를 통해 가장 잘 나타나는데, 리더로서 본인이 인터뷰를 혼자 독식하는 것이 아니라, 멤버 모두가 균등하게 인터뷰에 참여할 수 있도록 배려한다. 또한 영어 인터뷰에서는 중간에서 영어 질문과 답변을 직접 통역하여 멤버들의 인터뷰가 원활하게 진행될 수 있도록 도와준다.
RM은 멤버들을 챙김과 동시에 리더로서 ‘부드러운 카리스마'를 보여주고 있다. BTS 멤버들이 갈등을 겪을 때마다 리더로서 팀을 위한 중재안을 내놨던 것도 그였다. 이때, ‘팀'을 강조하면서 솔직하게 말하되, 그러나 강압적이거나 비난하는 말투를 쓰지 않는다.
"화가 나더라도 조금은 생각해 줬으면 좋겠어. 누구 잘못인지가 중요한 게 아니야. 다들 잘못은 해. 다들 꼬인 부분은 있어. 둘 다 팀에 부정적인 영향을 줬잖아. 좀 더 물러나야 할 줄 안다고 생각해. 지는 게 아니라 팀에게 양보하는 거라고"
"정신 차려. 공연이야. 팬들은 며칠씩 줄 서서 기다리는데 우리끼리 아마추어처럼 그러지 말자. 우리끼리 싸우는 게 문제가 아니고 공연을 잘해야 해"
이런 몇 개의 말만 보아도 그의 리더십의 깊이를 느낄 수 있다.
서로 생각과 성장 배경이 다른 사람들이 함께하는 만큼 팀에서는 언제나 갈등이 발생할 수밖에 없다. 여기서 리더에게 중요한 것은 갈등을 어떻게 원만하게 해소하는가이다.
RM은 멤버들 간의 갈등 속에서 어물쩍 상황을 넘기는 것이 아니라 절제된 목소리로 문제의 본질을 파고들며 적극적으로 멤버들의 화해를 중재한다.
BTS멤버들은 “RM이 없었다면 방탄도 없었다”라고 말한다고 한다.
RM은 “내가 좋은 리더가 아니라 다른 멤버들이 나를 좋은 리더로 만들어준다”라고 말하는 겸손함도 보인다.
방탄소년단 BTS라는 얘기가 나올 때마다 항상 같이 나오는 말이 바로 멤버 RM의 리더십이다. 아마 아이돌 그룹이 리더십으로 좋은 평가를 받는 사례는 한국 연예계 역사상 정말 드문 사례라고 본다.
과거에는 독보적인 카리스마로 팀원들을 이끄는 강한 리더십이 통했지만, 요즘은 팀원들의 강점과 자율성을 살리면서 함께 나아가는 리더십을 원하고 있다. RM은 오늘날 사람들이 원하는 리더십의 특징들을 고루 갖춘 진정한 리더라고 생각한다.
RM의 영어실력과 유엔연설
RM은 미국 엘렌쇼 출연 당시 미국 시트콤 '프렌즈'를 보며 회화 실력을 쌓았다고 전했다.
그 후 이 말에 대해 그는 "사실 '프렌즈'만 봐서 되는 건 아니다. 제가 영어 학원을 20개 넘게 다녔다"면서도 "'프렌즈'를 자막 있는 버전, 없는 버전 모두 많이 보고 했던 게 맞아떨어진 것 같다"라고 설명했다.
이어 그는 "팝 음악도 많이 듣고, 가수들이 인터뷰하는 영상을 보면서 실제로 많이 쓰는 표현이 뭔지 공부했다. 영어 공부를 할 때 단어는 책으로만 하면 될 것 같고 영화, 영상을 많이 보는 게 좋은 것 같다"라고 덧붙였다.
그 결과, 지금도 많은 사람들에서 회자되는 2018년 BTS의 UN 연설이 나올 수 있었다.
이 연설은 유엔아동기금 (UNICEF)의 청년 어젠다 “제너레이션 언리미티드 (Generation Unlimited)” 발표 행사에서 했었다. 방탄소년단의 리더 RM이 연설을 했으며, "사랑으로 가득 찬 세상을 만들기 위해 우리는 서로를 바라보며 함께 일해야 한다"는 메시지를 전달했다. 이 연설은 전 세계적으로 화제가 되었으며, 방탄소년단의 글로벌한 인기를 한번 더 확인할 수 있었다.

Thank you, Mr. Secretary general, UNICEF Executive director, all the excellency and the distinguished guests across the world.
My name is Kim nam joon, also known as RM, the leader of group the BTS.
It is an incredible honor to be invited to an occasion with such significance for today's young generation.
Last November, BTS Launched the Love Myself Campaign, with the belief that True love first begins with loving myself. We've been partnering with UNICEF's End Violence program to protect children and young people all over the world from violence. And our fans have become a major part of this campaign, with their actions and their enthusiasm.
We truly have the best fans in the world.
And I'd like to begin by talking about myself. I was born in ilsan, a city near Seoul, South Korea. It is a really beautiful place with a lake, hills and even an annual flower festival. I spent a very happy childhood there and I was just an ordinary boy. I used to look up at the nice sky and wonder, and I used to dream the dreams of a boy. I used to imagine that I was a superhero who could save the world.
And in an intro to one of our early albums, there is a line that says my heart stopped when I was maybe nine or ten. Looking back, I think that's when I began to worry about what other people thought of me and started seeing myself through their eyes. I stopped looking up at the night skies, the stars. I stopped daydreaming. Instead, I just tried to jam myself into the molds that other people made.
Soon, I began to shut out my own voice, and then started to listen to the voices of others. No one called out my name, and neither did I. My heart stopped and my eyes closed shut. So, like this, I, we all lost our names and we became like ghosts. But I had one sanctuary and that was music. There was a small voice inside of me that said "wake up man and listen to yourself". But it took me a quite long time to hear music calling out my real name.
Even after making the decision to join BTS, there were a lot of hurdles. Some people might not believe but most people thought we were hopeless.
And sometimes, I just wanted to quit. But I think I was very lucky that I didn't give it all up. And I am sure that I and we will keep stumbling and falling like this.
BTS has become an artist performing in those huge stadiums and selling millions of albums right now, but I am still an ordinary 24 year old guy. If there's anything that I've achieved, it was only possible that I have my other BTS members right by my side, and because of the love and the support that our army fans all over the world made for us.
Maybe I made a mistake yesterday, but yesterday's me is still me. Today, I am who I am with all of my faults and my mistakes. Tomorrow I might be a tiny bit wiser, and that will be me, too. These faults and mistakes are what I am, making up the brightest stars in the constellation of my life.
I have come to love myself for who I am for who I was, and for who I hope to become.
I'd like to say one last thing. After releasing our love myself albums and launching the love myself campaign, we started to hear remarkable stories from our fans all over the world how our message helped them overcome their hardships in life and start loving themselves. Those stories constantly remind us of our responsibility. So let's take all one more step. We have learnt to love ourselves, so now I urge you to speak yourself.

Like most people, I've made many and plenty mistakes in my life. I have many faults, and I have many more fears, but I am gonna embrace myself as hard as I can and I am starting to love myself gradually, just little by little.
